The old Canoe Place building has become quite familiar to the firefighters of the Star Hose Company No. 1 over the past month, while one training session after another was held in the building prior to its eventual demolition. Last night the Port Allegany Fire Department was back at the former restaurant and hotel, but this time it was no drill at all. Station 3 and Ambulance 3 were dispatched for a "Possible Structure Fire" at 2241hrs. Chief 320 (T. Roys) arrived on scene immediately after dispatch and reported a working structure fire.
Chief 310 (F. Roys) arrived seconds later, established "Main Street Command" and further reported fire showing on the first floor, side Delta. Chief 3 (Ernst) arrived and assumed Operations Chief. Engine 33 (Capt. Al Johnson) and Engine 32 (Capt. M. Johnson) responded with 11 firefighters in just one minute. Each engine secured their own water supply while the crew from Engine 33 split and stretched a 2 1/2 inch handline to the interior of the building while the rest of the crew
simultaneously stretched a back-up line. The engine crew found fire in a single room and quickly extinguished it. Engine 32's crew assumed truck company responsibilities and began opening up and checking for extension on the second and third floors. Command reported the fire under control in less than 10 minutes and requested the State Police Fire Marshal. All units were back in quarters and ready in about an hour.
Units on Scene: Engines 33, 32; Rescue 38; Ambulance MA3A
Command: Chief 310 (F. Roys)
