At 0207 the Star Hose Company #1 was dispatched for a Motor Vehicle Accident, reported to be a tractor trailer on fire near the Jehovah's Witness Church on Route 6 West of Port Allegany. Chief 3 (Ernst) and Chief 310 (F. Roys) both responded immediately, followed closely by Engine 32 (Lt. A. Johnson) with 5 firefighters, Rescue 38 (Capt. M. Johnson) with 4, and Tanker 35 (Chief T. Roys) with 2. While units were en route, McKean County 911 advised that multiple calls had been received reporting a tractor trailer hauling an empty box trailer on its side and on fire.
Chief 310 arrived first and established "Route 6 Command" confirming the dispatch information and reporting a diesel fuel leak from the fuel tanks and heavy fire, with the lone occupant out of the vehicle. Engine 32 arrived and stretched a handline to begin suppression, then placed another handline in service with foam and quickly extinguished the flammable liquids fire. Command requested Station 2 (Smethport) and McKean County EMA to assist with Haz-Mat. Rescue 38 and Engine 21 placed numerous absorbent "pads" and "booms" to control the approximately 250 gallons of fuel on the roadway. Command released all units with the exception of Engine 32, which stood by for the very large tow trucks to arrive, and units began returning at 0315.
Thank you to the Roulette Fire Department for providing an Engine Company to stand-by at our station during the incident, and a very special thank you for the Ladies Auxiliary for providing a warm breakfast at the station.
Units on Scene: Engines 32, 21; Rescue 38; Tanker 35, 22; Utility 34; Ambulance MA-3A; McKean County EMA 4201, 4202.
Command: Chief 310 (F. Roys)
