Thursday, 06 August 2009
Just after 0100hrs this morning, McKean County 911 recieved a call reporting smoke issuing from the eves at the Eldred Township Volunteer Fire Department's branch station, located on Route 446 south of Eldred. Units from Station 18 (Eldred Twp.) and Station 4 (Eldred Boro) were dispatched on Box 1863 at 0109hrs. The first responding units were advised by Communications that they were now taking multiple calls reporting a working fire. With this update, Chief 18 (Crowe) immediately requested the second alarm.

In only a matter of seconds after the 2nd alarm was dispatched, Engine 32 (Capt. Roys) responded with 5 firefighters, as well as Chief 3 (Ernst) and Chief 320 (Roys). Rescue 38 (Capt. Johnson) and Tanker 35 (FF Brundage) responded immediately behind, with 7 more firefighters.

Upon approaching the scene, Engine 32 and Rescue 38 were both given instructions to park in the Ethan Allen factory parking lot and send manpower to the scene to assist with suppression and overhaul. The crew from Engine 32 went to work throwing ladders and opening up in the rear of the building to access the fire for the Engine Companies from Stations 4 and 18, while Rescue 38 controlled utilities and assisted with overhaul.

Star Hose crews operated for just under two and a half hours and were back in quarters at about 0245hrs.

During the incident, Station 3 was also requested to close Route 446 to all Northbound traffic at Larabee Y, due to the operations on scene of the fire. Several Fire Police Officers and Utility 34 (FF B. Manning) responded to complete this task.

The Star Hose Company No. 1 would like to extend our sympathy to the members of the Eldred Township Fire Department on the loss of their station and equipment.
